Description

The course has three main objectives:

Objective 1: Updating and enriching the theoretical knowledge of the pilot with regards to flight incidents, SIV maneuvers/ exercises. Filling in theoretical knowledge gaps and clearing misconceptions formed from previous flight experience. Reconciling theoretical knowledge with flight reality using actual examples.
Objective 2: Learning how to prevent emergency situations and incidents, understanding how to recognize the signs of impending emergencies based on the feeling, visual cues, and reactions coming from the wing, during the flight.
Objective 3: Overcoming and learning how to manage and deal with an emergency situation, in case it has not been prevented successfully and is happening.

After the SIV training (including theoretical knowledge) the pilot becomes more efficient in flight and has improved their piloting skills in all kinds of disciplines (thermaling, soaring, accuracy, cross country, acro etc.)

The training includes four levels:

  • Elementary SIV
  • Basic SIV
  • Advanced SIV
  • Mastery SIV

The course will be organized in such a way as to include all the different pilot levels (from P2 to P5). This way, each pilot gets the training they need, depending on their specific level.

Programme

1. Theory

  • What is an unstable profile, how can the pilot build an unstable profile (20% -brake position)
  • How is the input/action with commands affecting the glider trajectory
  • Introducing and performing, as an exercise, (if this is missing as a skill or if this is needed) different type of turns
    • normal turn (weight shift + commands): benefits
    • flat turn (turn using the commands): benefits + what may be dangerous!
    • low speed turn (low speed entry +low speed exit): benefits
    • sliding (opposite weight shift): benefits + what may be dangerous!
  • Pitch theory
  • Asymmetric collapse theory
  • Spiral dive theory
  • Back fly theory

2. Gear Check

Making sure the equipment is in good conditions and appropriate for SIV, checking rescue mounting, rescue setup, checking the position of the pilot in the harness while he is hanged in the simulation, etc.

3. Practice

Maneuvers, Briefing + Video analysis. Each maneuver will be divided into the 4 levels listed in the description (Elementary, Basic, Advanced, Mastery), and the pilots will only practice the exercise that corresponds with their level.
